New LVMPD Accident Procedure Takes Effect March 3, 2014

Starting today, drivers in the Las Vegas Valley could be on their own after a car accident. A new Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department LVMPD traffic accident procedure states that LVMPD will only respond to the follow types of car accidents within their areas of patrol:
  • Hit and runs;
  • DUI / DWI;
  • Disabled vehicles resulting from an accident;
  • Accidents with injuries or a fatality;
  • Drivers without a license, proof of insurance, or registration;
  • Uncooperative drivers; and
  • Other disturbances that merit a police response.
According to a recent press release shared by LVMPD, those who are involved in a Las Vegas car accident should call 911 to have their situation assessed. If there are no injuries, people will be asked to collect and exchange information on their own.

Concerns have been raised that this move toward people policing their own actions and "doing the right thing" can result in exaggerated or understated accident claims, and inaccurate reporting.

For example, soft tissue injuries are not visible and do not always cause immediate pain. If you or a loved one is in an accident, suffer an injury, and do not collect the correct accident data, you could end up reducing your chances of seeking out and winning compensation for your injuries.

In response to these concerns, the LVMPD provided a list of steps for people to take following an accident on an FAQ page on their website. One of the suggestions listed is to use a smartphone app to help gather accident information.

Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys has an accident app that provides helpful tips and tools on what to do and not do after an accident, what information to collect and exchange, photos that should be taken, and much more!  The app also allows you to send your accident data directly to our Las Vegas personal injury law office right after the accident occurs.
